SERVICE - Grieving God’s Heart

Genesis 6:1-8

Introduction

In Genesis 4 and 5, we are introduced to two sons of Adam: Cain and his family line and Seth and his family line. They represented two different paths and two different destinations. Cain’s line represented worldly success. They were very impressive in some regard, but they pushed God away in hopes of making a name for themselves. In direct contrast to the line of Cain, Seth’s family line represented a godly remnant. They called upon the name of the Lord. They worshipped and trusted God. Even though they trusted God, their life was still hard, and they were weary. Lamech, the father of Noah, was trusting in a future rest. (Genesis 5:29) This means that the godly line of Seth would have to wait.

We don’t like waiting. Waiting on God in a world filled with sin and death is difficult. When the ungodly seems to be getting ahead, and we are left behind, weary from the painful toil, waiting on God for relief, it is then that we need hope. Without hope, we are tempted to throw in the towel and go with the flow of the world. But we walk by faith not by sight. (2 Corinthians 5:7) Genesis 6 is God’s word of warning and encouragement to us. This chapter calls us to walk by faith.
